Project Description: As part of a nationwide program to upgrade its Kmart facilities to meet ADA standards, the Sears Corporation retained the services of several engineering and architectural consultants to identify the necessary improvements and prepare drawings for the construction of these improvements. CVL Consultants entered into an on-call contract with Sears to prepare construction documents for the remediation of the parking lots associated with the Kmart Stores. CVL prepared construction documents for 13 Kmart stores in 9 States.
For each Kmart store location, CVL became familiar with local and state ADA requirements by the on-line review of regulations and telephone calls to the appropriate local Building Department. Amendments to the Federal ADA Regulations were incorporated into the remediation designs. Typical remediation tasks performed included the repair of sidewalks, design of ramps, mitigation of excessive slopes, drainage system repair, striping of handicapped parking spaces, signage, delineation of access corridors from adjacent street and bus stops and leveling of doorway thresholds.
Our designs were placed on construction drawings with the necessary details, construction notes, barrier list and quantities. Input was received from the Project Architect and final drawings sealed by a CVL registrant of the appropriate State.
CVL coordinated with Sears’ local construction project manager prior to the installation of these improvements and modified the plans and details as necessary to reflect field conditions.
CVL developed a protocol for the transfer of drawings, details and comments with the Sears Project Manager located in the Chicago, IL area that reduced coordination time. FTP sites and e-mails were actively used to upload completed plans for review
