Glendale Airpark
Airport Expansion
Glendale, Arizona
Services Provided: Civil Engineering, Water & Wastewater, Storm Water Management, Land Surveying, Land Planning
Project Description: The City of Glendale has planned a 120acre expansion at their current airport located along the south side of Glendale Boulevard, just west of New River. The project included creation of new hanger parcels, new control tower location, tie down expansion area, aircraft maintenance area, and aircraft fuel station.
Survey included: an ALTA and detailed topography of the existing undeveloped land; four completed ALTA’s within the existing airport FBO (fixed base operation) and tie-down rental area. CVL also completed a subdivided layout for 57-leased commercial parcels each with hanger space. Each of these parcels was provided with taxiway access to a new runway, which was approved by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration)
Civil Engineering: CVL completed the roadway and pedestrian access to each of the hanger parking areas. A collector roadway was designed for access to Glendale Boulevard. As a part of the collector alignment CVL was able to modify the roadway to avoid conflict with an existing sewer junction structure saving the client $250,000 of relocation costs.
Glendale Boulevard arterial roadway expansion plans were also completed. For the project, CVL also completed the master water, sewer, grading design, and traffic circulation plan.
Stormwater Engineering: CVL coordinated with the Maricopa County Flood Control District on the project to ensure the property was protected from the FEMA defined floodplain. CVL completed the onsite hydrology for the project by sizing retention/detention areas, managed street run off, and planned percolation measures. Existing water and sewer mains have historically crossed the project. The City of Glendale initially required a new sewer force main and pump station to be installed for the project. Through investigation into the existing lift station and creative thinking CVL was able to resize the pumps at the existing lift station saving the client $500,000 and 6 months of additional construction time.
Special considerations included: Agency contact and coordination. CVL had to coordinate with multiple disciplines and agencies, including the City of Glendale, Maricopa County Flood Control, Maricopa Department of Transportation, and FAA (Federal Aviation Administration).
CVL was able to accomplish these tasks with continuous coordination with all disciplines, and a complete and accurate set of improvement plans. Keeping lines of communication open was a key element and essential for CVL to keeping the project on schedule and budget.
