APS Tempe Substation Expansion

Power Substation & Walls

Tempe, Arizona

Services Provided:  Civil Engineering, Land Planning, Storm Water Management, Landscape architecture

Project Description: CVL prepared a preliminary site plan and final construction plans for submittal to the City of Tempe.  The site plan took into account the existing site conditions and made modifications to the existing roadway, sidewalk, and onsite landscape.  The site design also required retention of storm water from the surrounding site, which the City required to be retained inside the perimeter wall.  Theme walls were designed for the project. The project is located within Tempe’s Transportation Overlay District because of the vicinity to the light rail track. Because of this, the bus shelter was upgraded and relocated. Aesthetic improvements to the right of way included upgraded landscape, theme wall, seat walls, and meandering pedestrian walk ways. Driveway entrances to the project also were specified as stamped concrete. On behalf of APS, CVL prepared color graphics of the site and a materials board. CVL worked closely to respond to the neighborhood and community member’s input on the project. The City of Tempe felt as though the project went above and beyond what is necessary for a substation to fit into the community and subsequently approved the project.
