Northern Avenue Water Main Replacement

Surprise, Arizona

Services Provided: Civil Engineering, Water Infrastructure, Permitting, Survey

Project Description: The existing 6-inch ACP water line in Northern Avenue between Citrus and Perryville Roads has experienced an increasing number of breaks since 2010. EPCOR retained CVL to design a replacement water line. Three (3) alignment options were studied that would avoid the existing, active Maricopa Water District (MWD) irrigation ditch and minimize disruption to Northern Avenue, a MCDOT roadway.  Contract documents were prepared.

Special Considerations:

• Disturbance of the active MWD ditch was minimized by recommending the “missile-ing” of services and water line beneath the ditch.

• A phasing plan for the water main installation was prepared to minimize interruption of service to the neighborhood consisting of using existing valves to isolate discrete portions of the system during construction.

• CVL determined the permitting requirements from MCDOT and MWD at the conceptual stage of the project as part of the ranking of the alignment options. Early coordination resulted in a streamlined review process.
