Large-Diameter Water Transmission Line

Interstate 17 & Sweetwater Avenue
Phoenix, Ariz.

Project Size:  6,400 linear feet

Project Description: The existing 22-inch steel water transmission line in this dense, urban area of Phoenix had reached its design life cycle and needed to be replaced.  As a result, CVL designed approximately 6,400 linear feet of replacement water line with a 24-inch diameter.  Water service disruption to the commercial/education properties along southbound Interstate-17’s frontage road was accomplished through the use of a temporary, above-ground ductile iron water line while the replacement lines are installed.

Value Added:  Multiple existing residential neighborhoods and businesses exist along the water transmission alignment.  CVL developed a “Public Coordination Program” to provide residents and business owners with up-to-date information and opportunities to be heard.  The Public Coordination Program allowed issues to be presented in the early stages of design and avoid costly delays later.

In addition, the water transmission line crossed under Interstate-17. CVL employed a jack and bore methodology in compliance with Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) requirements.  Close coordination with ADOT enabled design to move forward at a steady pace.
