Flood Mitigation Mapping & Design

Kayenta Road Improvements
Navajo County, Ariz.

Project Size:  2.5 miles

Project Description: Past development of Wetherill Heights residential subdivision demonstrated little regard for the potential of flood hazards, which had increased the potential for flood-related damage.  To compound the problem, aeolian erosion resulted in the deposition of loose friable soils within the subdivision.  Vehicles traveling along local roads have compacted this soil, creating corridors for storm water runoff.  During heavy rain events, the local roads erode and transport material downstream towards the Kayenta Elementary School.

Value Added:  CVL used the FLO-2D model to determine both the existing hydrologic and hydraulic conditions of the area. Because the subdivision was already established, CVL needed to quantify the flows that were being conveyed around existing homes and structures.  The model revealed detailed flood inundation characteristics that were used to develop a comprehensive flood mitigation strategy.

CVL’s close coordination with various stakeholders – including tribal government and local residents – kept the project moving ahead without large, unnecessary delays.
